iPhone Maker Sales Drop

E-mail Print PDF

FoxconnHon Hai (aka Foxconn Technology) sees Q1 2013 sales drop by -19% Y-o-Y to $29.96 billion Reuters reports, as declining iPhone sales hurt the Taiwanese device manufacturer even after 2012 was a record year for the company.

Around 60-70% of Hon Hai revenues come from iPhone and iPad manufacture-- and if Apple sales are down, the device manufacturer depending on it follows suit.

"A quarterly decline was expected, but not a yearly decline," KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo says. "This shows that Hon Hai's revenue depends too much on Apple, and iPhone orders corrected more than expected."

The analyst forecasts flat Q2 203 sales for Hon Hai before the company meets further profit pressures during H2 2013.

Fresh rumours emerge on the next Microsoft console-- Bloomberg reports the new Xbox carries an AMD processor, while Microsoft analyst Paul Thurrot claims the machine will be revealed on 21 May 2013.

XboxA switch to AMD (specifically an SoC combining a "Jaguar" CPU with a GPU) instead of the IBM Power PC technology means the new console will be incompatible with 360 game titles. It would also seal AMD's leadership of the console segment-- the Playstation 4 also makes use of x86-based AMD hardware, part of a Sony bid to make the console more attractive to developers.

Meanwhile veteran Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrot claims the company should reveal the console on May 2013 before an "early November" launch. News site The Verge confirms the report and adds further details will be available at June's E3 and Build events.

Intel reveals the future of Thunderbolt technology at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show-- boosting data rates from 10Gbps to 20Gbps in both directions.

Thunderbolt updateSeen in prototype form, Thunderbolt 2.0 (codenamed "Falcon Ridge") allows simultaneous 4K file transfer and display, and improves speeds via implementation of PCIe 3.0 technology outside the PC.

Falcon Ridge makes use of copper cables, is backwards-compatible with 1st generation Thunderbolt cables and connectors, and should be available from 2014.

At NAB Intel also previews the DSL4510 and 4410, a pair of updated Thunderbolt host controllers complete with DisplayPort 1.2 capability, power management improvements and reduced platform BOM costs.

Thunderbolt supports 2 low-latency communications protocols-- PCIe (data transfer) and DisplayPort (display). It works on data streams in both directions, meaning users get full bandwidth in both directions over a single cable.

XP RIPNext year comes the end of the longest-lived Microsoft OS yet, Windows XP-- Microsoft will only support Windows XP users until 8 April 2014.

Customers and partners will no longer receive XP and Office 2003 security updates or be able to leverage on Microsoft tech support after the date.

In other words, Microsoft wants everyone to migrate to Windows 7 (if not 8) sooner rather than later.

However Windows XP remains popular-- according to Net Applications XP is the 2nd biggest desktop OS around with 38.73% market share, even 10 years after initial release.
