The Blu-ray/iTunes Combo Server

E-mail Print PDF

Mozaex launches the Chroma multi-room entertainment server-- a device series the company claims is the first to legally support Blu-ray playback, the iTunes store and the Ultraviolet movie service.

Mozaex ChromaThe Chroma does not ship with unlicensed decryption software, thus avoiding the legal troubles plaguing the likes of Kaleidescape.

The "iBLU" feature handles both iTunes and Blu-ray discs, while iPlay allows the control of iTunes libraries with iDevice Remote app, complete with Apple Airport support (via Express unit).

The Chroma itself is not a single product, but a collection of separately sold device forming the multimedia server. It consists of the Chroma integrated Player and storage server (available with either 1 or 4TB storage), the Player BD (adds Blu-ray playback), the Player ND (Blu-ray player with no Blu-ray drive), the Sonnet (wireless music-only player) and the Stor (3TB external USB storage unit).

Adding further non-Mozaex USB or eSATA storage requires the payment of an additional license fee.

Users can add unlimited Sonnet music players to the system, allowing multi-room iTunes audio and other online media. The unit ships with a RF remote and is compatible with 3rd party systems from Control4, Vantage, Elan g! and Crestron.

What is Going On at OnLive?

E-mail Print PDF

Remember OnLive, the cloud gaming service to end all other gaming vendors? Now it reaches its own end, hits the reset button and goes through a so-called Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC).

onliveABC is a courts-free alternative to bankruptcy. It allows a company to transfer all assets to another company-- in the OnLive case, a yet-unnamed newly-formed entity (a "new OnLive," if you will) with "substantial funding" from venture capital firm Lauder Partners.

The process also allows the company to dissolve costly server contracts-- the chief reason for OnLive's financial woes and eventual end.

The news follows reports of the company mass-firing virtually all employees and HTC announcing a $40 million in losses from a February 2011 investment in OnLive.

Hubert Joly: A New (Best Buy CEO) Hope?

Best Buy hopes to turn its situation around with its choice of new leader-- Carlson CEO Hubert Joly, a man Best Buy claims has a record in turning the fortunes of companies in the media, technology and services sectors around.

Joly Best BuyYou might not know who Carlson is-- but you surely visited at least two of its holdings, Radisson and TGI Friday's. Something of hospitality business giant, Carlson operates hotels and restaurants in over 150 countries.

Joly joins Best Buy from September 2012 once he manages to secure a visa (due to his being French), The Wall Street Journal reports. He replaces current interim CEO G. Mike Mikan.

The troubled retailer has been looking for a leader since April 2012, following the sudden resignation of ex-CEO Brian Dunn due to an "improper relationship" with a 29-year old female employee.

The scandal also forced Best Buy founder (and ex-chairman) Richard Schulze to resign, since he failed to inform the board about the relationship. Schulze plans to buy his old company back, and Best Buy even gave him an offer-- an offer Schulze declined, according to the retailer.

Will the French touch turn Best Buy's fortunes around? The retailer already lost $1.2 billion during fiscal 2012 (ending March 2012), compared to the $1.3bn profit from the previous year.

So Microsoft Does Have Partners for Win RT OEM

E-mail Print PDF

Remember the comments from Acer CEO J.T. Wang on Microsoft's going ahead with the Surface tablet? Maybe here is another reason for his outburst (or proof of Wang's belief that Microsoft is going into competition with him)-- Acer is not in the list of initial Windows RT OEM partners.

Win RT tabletMicrosoft lists Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Samsung as the first vendors selling Windows RT devices at launch. It also mentions Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments as silicon partners.

Other than Acer, familiar names missing from the partner list include HP and HTC (apparently "shut out" of Windows 8 according to a July 2012 Bloomberg report).

A blog post from Microsoft VP of Ecosystem and Planning Mike Angiulo promises the OEM partners will not only offer tablets, but also PCs with “full keyboard and touchpad solutions, whether removable/dockable or a traditional clamshell.”
