Microsoft's War for the Living Room Continues

E-mail Print PDF

Microsoft plans to turn the Xbox 360 into even more than just a games console/online media player combination-- Xbox SmartGlass promises to unite all screens in the house (including mobile devices) with the machine.

Xbox SmartglassXbox SmartGlass is a wifi remote app. It allows users to control both video and game content with tablets or smartphones, using the Xbox 360 console as a hub.

First seen at E3 2012, the app also acts as a second screen-- showing extra video content depending on the content on screen. One interesting E3 demo uses HBO TV series Game of Thrones, with an interactive map on the tablet while the console plays an episode.

The app will be available for both iDevices and Androids, as well as (obviously) Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

According Microsoft, more American customers are using the console to consume media than playing online video games through Xbox Live apps for services such as Netflix and Hulu. European customers can access content from the BBC (UK), Telefonica (Spain), ZDF (Germany) and MediaSet (Italy).

The Wifi Alliance hopes it will have the standard of choice once the wireless video revolution happens-- with Miracast, a technology set aiming to beat WiDi and AirPlay.

Wifi AllianceThe alliance still needs to finish the certification standard (which is to launch later this year), and will award compatible device with a "Wifi Certified Miracast" mark.

Devices eligible for certification include notebooks, smartphones and tablets.

One vendor already supports the standard-- future versions of Texas Instruments' OMAP processors and WiLink connectivity solutions (including the recently announced OMAP 4470/WiLink 7.0 combo) will be Miracast compliant.

Is it an over-large Android tablet or an ARM based desktop? That is the question visitors ask when seeing the VCD22 Android Smart Display at the ViewSonic Computex 2012 stand.

ViewSonic VCD22The VCD22 looks like an all-in-one desktop, but it carries a 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor and runs on Android 4.0. The 22-inch touchscreenhandles 1920x1080 resolution, even if it appears to suffer from low contrast and poor viewing angles.

The device aims at family or classroom use, with the Computex display model having a variety of family-aimed software. ViewSonic suggests a $479 price tag, which seems to represent decent value.

Google celebrates the first birthday of Chrome OS with a triad of announcements-- the improved Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook, the first Mac Mini-style "Chromebox," and general improvements on the OS itself.

Chrome PCsLike previous models, the Series 5 550 carries a 12.1" (with 1280x800 resolution) display, x2 USB ports and weighs 1.4kg. It also has a dual-core Intel Atom CPU, 4GB of RAM and 16GB of storage (boosted via SD card slot and Google cloud-based storage).

Connectivity comes through either wifi or 3G, and Samsung says it even improved the trackpad.

Even more interesting is the Chromebox-- a Chrome OS-powered mini desktop PC with a 1.9GHz Atom processor, x6 USB ports, x2 DisplayPort++ connectors (compatible with HDMI, DVI and VGA) and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless keyboards.

The 2 devices do manage to make life on Chrome OS even more tempting-- especially since the OS now has a new desktop-style UI, remote access functions, an improved media player and built-in photo editor and uploader.

Google should be roll out more Chrome OS improvements next month (in time for the Google I/O conference), including Google Drive integration, a native Microsoft Office document viewer and offline document editing and storage.

Is Chrome OS ready to challenge Windows or OS X? Probably not, but it looks like Google is not giving up on its PC dreams just yet...
