A Real Life Instagram Camera

Sometimes an idea is crazy enough to might actually work-- like the Socialmatic, a concept for an Instagram-powered digital Polaroid camera from Antonio De Rosa.

SocialmaticFor those of you not in the know, Instagram is a smartphone camera app for iPhones and Androids. It turns regular digital snaps into "artsy" vintage-style photos, with a number of filters emulating classic film cameras (chiefly Polaroid instant cameras).

The Socialmatic proposal looks fairly interesting-- it suggests the camera should have 2 main lenses (one for main capture, the other for 3D filters, webcam applications and QR code capturing), a touchscreen interface, 16GB of storage and wifi/Bluetooth connectivity.

Nvidia Latest Has Two Keplers

An event like the Shanghai Game Festival is an ideal place for an Nvidia announcement-- specifically one for the GeForce GTX 690, a graphics card with not one but two 28nm Kepler GPUs.

GeForce GTX 690Nvidia describes the GTX 690 as "the world's fastest graphics card" (beating the recently released GTX 680) and aims it directly at the high-end PC gamer market.

The card carries 3072 Cuda cores and reaches clock speeds of 1019MHz. It has an outer frame in trivalent chromium-plated aluminium and thixomolded magnesium alloy around the fan to reduce vibrations and boost cooling.

Dual vapour chambers, nickel-plated finstack and center-mounted axial fan help keep card temperatures even lower.

Nvidia claims the GTX 690 runs Crysis 2 Ultra at 57.8fps-- a task the GTX 680 does at 32.3fps, apparently.

HP introduces not only a number of new ultrabooks, but also what it calls "Sleekbooks"-- thin-and-light laptops that are not quite thin-and-light enough to fit Intel ultrabook standards.

HP Envy Spectre XTSleekbooks cost less than ultrabooks and carry either Intel or AMD processors. Both kinds of laptop are less than 19.8mm thick, weigh around 1.8kg and have batteries lasting 7-9 hours.

New HP ultrabooks include the premium 13.3" Envy Spectre XT (with Intel Ivy Bridge CPU and 128GB SSD within an all-metal body) and the Envy Ultrabook with either 14" or 15.6" display options.

As mentioned above, Sleekbooks are available with either Intel or AMD processors  and are available in 14" and 15.6" sizes. Intel models come with optional discrete graphics, while AMD models offer discrete-class graphics.

All models with Intel processors carry now-familiar ultrabook technologies such as Rapid Start, Identity Protection, Smart Response and Smart Connect.

Enterprise customers also get a new HP offering-- the EliteBook Folio 9470m, with a 14" display and 9 hours battery life. It weighs 1.6kg and carries a 3rd generation Intel vPro processor.
