Retailers to Lose More Pricing Control

E-mail Print PDF

Sure, the customer is King but that's about to change. Now the customer will become a real Dictator.

decide shotRetailers, already facing massive disruption to their business model from the Internet, will now be forced to confront further shifts of power into consumer hands.

Imagine if consumers knew exactly WHEN to purchase a consumer electronics product to minimize their spend? How many consumers would follow pricing cycles to buy cheaper-- and how much would that impact retailer margin?

Oren Etzioni's latest startup, Decide.com applies to consumer electronics and appliances the same science behind Farecast (Etzioni started this travel-fare prediction company and then sold it to Microsoft for Bing.)

Decide analyzes web sources (thousands of sources on the history of prices, the models in the range, even to rumors of new models) to answer the consumer's most important question: WHEN to buy or wait on their consumer electronics purchases.

RIM Bets on New BlackBerry

Will a BlackBerry upgrade help a struggling RIM turn fortunes around? New RIM CEO Thorsten Heins surely hopes so as he unveils the next-gen BlackBerry 10 platform at the BlackBerry World conference.

BlackBerry 10 prototypeBlackBerry 10 is a shift from earlier versions, being an entirely new platform with a focus on virtual keyboards. The prototype device seen at Blackberry World has no physical keyboard-- it is a 4.2" iPhone-style device lacking in physical buttons.

RIM says the virtual keyboard "learns" how users type on the keys, and has a number of swipe gestures for quick text editing (such as swiping across letters to delete words).

An other feature RIM shows off is the camera software-- the camera captures what it sees before the user even presses the shutter button, allowing one to scrub through a timeline to find the perfect shot.

Business users are also getting new productivity apps, such as a Cisco teleconferencing app.

In the hopes of getting developers on board, RIM is giving prototype devices to BlackBerry World attendees. As for the rest of the market, BlackBerry 10 should launch sometime around Q3 2012 with a new RIM smartphone or two.

Canalys: Europe Lags Behind in Tablets

E-mail Print PDF

According to Canalys European tablet adoption is lagging behind other territories, as EMEA shipments reach 4.7m units in Q1 2012 with 180% Y-o-Y growth.

tabletsIn comparison global Q1 2012 tablet shipments triple from Q1 2011, reaching 20.3m units.

"The challenging economic conditions in Europe are affecting the market," Canalys says in explanation of the EMEA totals, echoing concerns from other analysts.

Content availability is also a problem-- the combination of different languages and digital rights regulations makes the consistent localisation of content across Europe complicated and costly.

According to the analyst, the territories presenting vendors with most growth opportunities are within Asia Pacific, particularly China (currently 2nd biggest tablet market following the US).

Apple continues dominating the market, with 58% Q1 2012 market share (down from 74% in Q1 2011). Following are Amazon with 10% share (even if all Kindle Fire shipments are in N. America), Samsung and Asus.
