Turning an iDevice into a Robot Pet

E-mail Print PDF

Tamagotchi creators Bandai have plans to turn iDevices (iPhone or iPod Touch) into robotic pets with Smartpet-- a clunky yet cute robot dog with an iPhone for a brain.

SmartpetControlling the robot is a free app, making the Smartpet to react to touchscreen gestures, voice commands or movements in front of the Facetime camera. The "pet" can learn various tricks, as well as make facial expressions, sing and even dance with other Smartpets via Bluetooth.

And when the games are over the Smartpet also doubles as an alarm clock and a handsfree set.

It will be available in either black or white in Japan from April 24. Sadly enough, we have no word on international availability yet.

Dixons Travel opens two airport stores at East Midlands and Gatwick North, each with new formats suiting specific airport store requirements.

Gatwick DixonsThe Gatwick North store (in the main concourse) is the first Dixons pop-up store-- a 50 sq m "Add" store supplementing the existing Dixons Travel outlet. Designed with a warm colour palette (to attract female customers, Dixons says), it sells aspirational devices such as headphones, tablets and SLR cameras.

The retailer says the Add store is "already seeing sales up over 30%."

Meanwhile at East Midlands Dixons has a 40 sq m concept store in a high traffic walkway with a wall to wall display and 2 play-tables. It sells headphones (Dr Dre, Sennheiser and Bose), iDevices, tablets, cameras and travel accessories.

UK retailer GAME files the intention to appoint an administrator, even if it will continue operating "as normal" while discussing possible solutions with lenders and 3rd parties.

GameThe news follows the suspension of trading in GAME Group shares.

Reportedly Comet-buyers OpCapita made an offer to buy GAME (and take on £100M of debt), a bid rejected by GAME lenders.

Earlier this week the UK Press Associated reported GAME owes creditors, suppliers and banks something around £180M-- a sum it has to raise in a week-- as well as £21M in rent payments and £12M in wages.

GAME's woes started after leading companies (including EA, Nintendo, Microsoft, Tecmo Koei, Capcom and Activision) started refusing to supply Game with awaited new titles such as Mass Effect 3, following concerns over creditworthiness.

The Google Data Mining Bonanza

E-mail Print PDF

Google data miningOver the years, Google has created a rich seam of user-related data... data it can potentially (and very extensively!) mine, as seen in this illustration from Slovakia-based security vendor ESET.

The so-called "unified privacy policy" combines over 60 separate Google product and service privacy policies into one-- giving the company greater freedom to pick and choose data from sources as varied as Gmail, Google Maps, Search and YouTube. So the company can technically use someone's search history to target ads for them while watching YouTube videos.
