A Micron blog post brings an update on GDDR5X technology-- following the January publishing of the GDDR5X Graphics Memory Standard by JEDEC, the technology is set to enter mass production by Q3 2016.

Micron GDDR5X MemoryFirst announced back in October 2015, GDDR5X is an intermediary GDDR5 update promising twice the memory bandwidth without need for changes to graphic card design or pricing. Micron says the GDDR5X program is already "in full swing," with components performing at data rates reaching 13Gb/s.

The company produces first generation GDDR5X 8Gb (1GB) density chips using a 20-nanometer process, and adds a bump to 14Gb/s speeds is possible in the future. Current GDDR5 memory reaches maximum performance of 7Gbps. In addition GDDR5X provides frame buffer size flexibility, with either x16 or x32 use, as well as overclocking potential via higher speed bins.

GDDR5X sampling should start from Q2 2016 before full volume production kicks off.
