Atari Returns to Game Consoles

E-mail Print PDF

Here's for unexpected comebacks-- following the E3 2017 tease of a "brand new Atari product," the once iconic games company reveals the Ataribox, a console featuring a look reminiscent of classic Atari hardware.

AtariboxDescribed in an announcement newsletter to fans as "a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari," little is actually known about the Ataribox. As mentioned earlier, the design is inspired by old Atari machines and complete with wood paneling, ribbed lines and raised back. It will come in either wood or black/red finishes.

Connectivity comes through HDMI and x4 USB ports, and an SD card slot will be included. Atari does not detail what games will be available on the machine, but it does suggest a combination of "classic" and "current" gaming content. In other words, it might be similar to the likes of the NES and SNES Classic, only with retro games from the American company's back catalogue.

Launch details are not available, as the company insists it "want[s] to get this right." However a French note to investors reveals the machine will be released via crowdfunding campaign, in order to "limit risk taking."
