GoPro Intros Hero 6 Black, Fusion Cameras

E-mail Print PDF

GoPro continues to battle it out against both smartphones and the rest of the action camera competition as it presents the Hero 6 Black and the Fusion, the company's take on the 360-degree cameras.

Hero 6 BlackAs a refresh of both Hero and Black GoPro camera lines, the Hero 6 Black offers all the features expected from a high-end action camera. It shoots 4K video at 60fps, as well as slow motion at 2.7K at 120fps and super-slo-mo 240fps at 1080p resolution. Dynamic range should also be improved for better images in mixed lighting conditions, while digital image stabilisation promises to eliminate camera shake and vibrations.

Powering such improvements is the first GoPro custom processor, the GP1. Designed specifically for the company by Socionext, the GP1 gives the camera more control over image processing flow. Another improvement is in wifi, since the camera uses 5GHz connectivity for faster pairing with smartphones.

The camera remains ruggedised and waterproof, and includes a GPS, 2-inch LCD touchscreen on the back, voice control, and the instant offloading and editing of footage. Users can also attach the camera to a Karma drone.

Also detailed is the Fusion, the GoPro 360-degree camera first presented earlier this year. It uses 2 lenses to shoot 5.2K video at 30fps, captures 360-degree audio, is waterproof and should be compatible with "most" GoPro mounts. All other features typical of GoPro cameras are included, such as GPS, wifi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and voice control.

Gopro FusionOn the software side the camera includes "OverCapture"-- a means for users to manipulate 360-degree footage for sharing as a flat 1080p video. One can create "tiny planet" videos or photos, or select a 1080p frame or still photo from the 360-degree sphere to create a "shoot first, frame later" tool.

The Hero 6 Black is available now, with the Fusion to follow on November 2017.
