DJI announces a sequel to the successful Mavic Air drone-- the imaginatively named Mavic Air 2, an update promising to combine high-grade image, intuitive flight performance and "revolutionary" smart technology.

Featuring the same portable foldable design as the first model, the Mavic Air 2 weighs 570g and carries updated motors, new electronic speed controllers (ESCs) and an enhanced battery allowing for up to 34 minutes of flight. Proprietary OcuSync 2.0 connectivity provides a reliable and stable video feed from the drone at a maximum distance of 10km. The connectivity technology supports both 2.4 and 5.8GHz frequency bands, and auto-switches between the two according to signal strength.

Moving on to imaging, the Mavic Air 2 carries a larger 1/2-inch sensor allowing it to record 4K video at 60fps. Customers can also record HDR content, as well as 1080p slow motion video at either 120 or 240fps and 8K "Hyperlapse" videos. A mechanical 3-axis gimbal ensures smooth imagery, and allows for still photography at 12 or 48MP. A SmartPhoto feature snaps 12MP photos using "advanced" scene analysis and AI capabilities to automatically choose between three capture options.

DJI also pushes the safe flight capabilities of the drone, as it uses Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) 3.0 to create paths around obstacles. It is also the first drone from the company to include AirSense technology, a mean to warn pilots of other aircraft nearby with messages, sound and vibrations. Done control comes through controller with smartphone holder for pairing with the companion DJI Fly app complete with video and image editing features.

The Mavic Air 2 is set to ship from mid-May 2020.
