Kickstarting a Second Laptop Display

The DUO promises to be a "completely portable dual-screen laptop accessory" customers simply attack to the back of any notebook to add at least some measure of multitasking capability.

Maker Mobile Pixels says the DUO is a true plug-and-play dual-display laptop solution. It consists of a 12.5-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution IPS display users attach to the lid of the notebook via magnetic mounting system. Once attached, the display slides out from the side whenever required, just like the second display of the 2009 Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds.

AOC Intros G1 Monitor Trio

AOC launches the G1 series-- a trio of "aggressively curved" gaming monitors in sizes ranging from 23.6- to 27- and 31.5-inch all with FHD, VA panels, FreeSync, 144Hz refresh and wide viewing angles.

Dubbed the C24G1, C27G1 and C32G1, the three monitors feature 1500R (C24G1) to 1800R (C27G1, C32G1) curvatures in a three-sided borderless design in black with red accents. All are compatible with AMD FreeSync, with syncing up to 144Hz, and feature a fast response time of 1ms to minimise motion blur. In addition, AOC promises low input lag to ensure actions from input devices translate into visual feedback without latency caused by internal monitor processing.

AOC Adds to G90-Series Monitors

AOC announces an addition to the 90-series gaming monitors-- the G2590FX, a 24.5-inch number featuring 144Hz refresh rate with AMD Radeon FreeSync technology and 1ms response time.

The G2590FX carries a 1920 x 1080 resolution TN panel offering 400 nits brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and 170°/160° horizontal/vertical viewing angles. Aimed at "most budget-conscious gamers," it comes in a 3-sided frameless design on top of a stand allowing tilt adjustments from -3.5° to 21.5°. VESA mounting is also an option.

Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) announces a gaming monitor with a company first-- the ROG Swift PG27UQ features DisplayHDR 1000 certification to ensure the HDR quality is top notch.

The Swift PG27UQ features the same 27-inch IPS panel as the Predator X27, a gaming monitor Acer launched just a week ago. As such it offers an identical 4K UHD native resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. It also boasts 1000cd/m2 peak brightness, factory colour calibration and LED backlighting able to dynamically control 384 zones. Meanwhile integrated Nvidia G-Sync technology eliminates lag and screen tearing.

IDC: WW Q4 2017 Monitor Shipments Total 31.7 Million

Global monitor shipments total 31.7 million units in Q4 2017, IDC reports-- a 2.5% Y-o-Y increase fueled by the holiday season, although the analyst expects declines for the near future.

IDC predicts monitor shipments will decline at rates of around 2% Y-o-Y from 2018 through 2022, even if Q4 2017 was a better than forecast overall with all regions posting Y-o-Y growth. Full-year 2018 shipments are set to total 116m, with a Y-o-Y decline of -3.6% in Q4 2018 shipments reaching 30.6m. By 2020, global shipments should total less than 112m as adoption of mobile devices at lower price points continues.

LG Releases 38WK95C Ultrawide Monitor

LG releases the 38WK95C, an ultrawide 37.5-inch monitor complete with 21:9 3840x1600 resolution curved IPS display, HDR10 support, 99% sRGB colour reproduction and a 3-sided borderless design.

First seen at CES 2018, the monitor offers a grey-to-grey response time of 5ms and a 75MHz refresh rate with AMD FreeSync support. Brightness reaches 300 cd/m², while colour depth reproduction is limited by the 10-bit (8-bit+FRC) panel. A variety of picture modes for different content are built-in, such as Custom, HDR Effect, Reader, Photo, Cinema, Dark Room1/2, Colour Weakness, FPS1 Game/FPS2 Game, RTS Game and Custom (Game) modes for Non-HDR content.

MSI Adds to Optix Gaming Monitors

MSI launches a pair of Optix gaming monitors-- the Optix MPG27C and MPG27CQ, both 27-inch curved monitors featuring PrismSync illumination and SteelSeries GameSense technology.

The main differing factor between the two monitors is resolution, since the MPG27C is 1920 x 1080 while the MPG27CQ is 2560 x 1440. The higher resolution model also has a boost in brightness reaching up to 400 nits (the MPG27C on the other hand has 250 nits brightness). Otherwise the two feature a 1800R curved VA LED panel with 1ms response time, 48-144Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync, 115% sRGB gamut and 100% NTSC gamut.
