Nubia Puts Smartphone on the Wrists

While smartwatches appear to be moving away from being mere wrist-worn smartphones, ZTE spinoff Nubia goes in the opposite direction with the Nubia-a, a flexible screen device the company describes as a "wearable smartphone."

The Nubia-a looks like one of those delightful oddities the darker corners of IFA tend to house, even if it is the brainchild of a proven smartphone maker. Directly inspired by science fiction movie props, it claims to put all smartphone functions on the wrist, thanks to a proprietary Flex display wrapped halfway around a chunky wristband.

Eliminate Shoe Smells With Panasonic's Deodoriser

Another day, another unique gadget from the Land of the Rising Sun-- the Panasonic MS-DS100 shoe deodoriser, equipped with "nanoe X" able to "remove unpleasant shoe odours in a simple way."

A Smaller Version of the Elgato Stream Deck

Corsair-owned Elgato Gaming announces a smaller, lower cost version of the Stream Deck-- the self-explanatory Stream Deck Mini is, essentially, a cut down take on the popular game video mixer/switcher.

The Stream Deck Mini does just about everything its larger sibling does, only in a form factor ideal for smaller workspaces. It also has a triangular, propped up case, meaning no case is required. The only difference lies in the number of buttons, since while the original Stream Deck has 15 customisable OLED keys, the Stream Deck Mini has 6.

A VirtualLink Connector for VR Hardware

Next generation VR headsets needs a different kind of connection standard, the industry declares. Enter the VirtualLink standard, a USB-C alternate mode able to provide all necessary power and data through a single Type-C cable and connector.

VirtualLink is developed by a newly formed industry consortium bringing together big names including Nvidia, AMD, Oculus, Valve and Microsoft. So far the consortium is merely announcing its intentions, namely the creation of an "open industry standard" boiling down all VR headsets plugs into a single, thin cable.

Summer Shipping for Developer Magic Leap Headset

A developer-focused Twitch stream reveals some details on the first headset from mystery AR/VR startup Magic Leap, including some measure of technical specifications and a launch window.

Details are still sparse, but the company revealed the One headset runs on the Nvidia Tegra X2-- a mobile chipset both powerful and power-efficient allowing to device to run slim hip pack with a design reminiscent of a Sony Discman. The company does not provide battery life estimates, since apparently it depends on the developer. As such, a simple puzzle will use less power than a full-blown action game. One also has to keep in mind the various technology in play within the game in question, such as hand gesture tracking, eye tracking and physical controller.
