AMD powers MSI Alpha 15 Gaming Laptop

MSI follows on the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 5500M GPU with a laptop featuring such mobile gaming hardware-- the Alpha 15, a 15.6-inch laptop also featuring Radeon 7 3750H APU and a 144Hz 1080p IPS Radeon FreeSync display.

According to MSI, the addition of the Radeon RX 5500M allows for "triple-digit" framerates, as well as enhanced game visuals through FidelityFX technology. Further boosting performance is Cooler Boost 5, a 7-heatpipe cooling module designed to take advantage of the hardware, as well as the addition of either 8 or 16GB of RAM. Storage comes through x1 M.2 SSD and x1 2.5-inch SATA HDD.

Microsoft Refreshes Surface Lineup

Microsoft presents what it claims is "the broadest Surface lineup ever"-- one featuring revamped laptop and tablet offerings, as well as accessories and a dual-screen tablet, the Surface Neo.

Available in 13.5- and 15-inch options with new colours and finishes, the Surface Laptop 3 ships with either a 10th gen Intel Core processor or, in case of the 15-inch model, the AMD Ryzen Surface Edition processor. The result of a co-engineering effort between Microsoft and AMD, the processor promises the "fastest graphics performance" of any 15-inch laptop.

In further details, the Surface Laptop 3 features a full-size keyboard with 1.33mm key travel with the choice of either Alcantara fabric or an aluminium all-metal finish. The trackpad is 20% larger, while connectivity comes through both USB-A and USB-C ports. Microsoft says conferencing is also catered for, since the laptop features improved front-facing cameras, OmniSonic speakers and dual far-field studio microphones.

Context: Record W. European Share for Chromebooks in Q3

According to Context, Chromebooks make a 11% of notebooks sold in W. Europe in July and August 2019-- up from 8% in the same period last year-- with the reason being the seasonal Q3 2019 peak in education demand.

Shipments are up by 27% Y-o-Y, with volume sales to commercial channels (including resellers focusing on education) growing by 20% Y-o-Y. As a result, Chromebooks account for 14.3% of notebooks sold to commercial resellers in early Q3 2019, up from 12.7% in Q3 2018.

Sales growth into consumer channels is even stronger, but the increase comes from a much smaller base. Sales to retail and consumer e-tail are up by 57% Y-o-Y, bringing Chromebook share of consumer notebooks from 3.5% in early Q3 2019 to 6% in Q3 2019. The UK  is the biggest Chromebook market for distributors, followed by Sweden, Spain and the Netherlands.

13.3-inch 4K Pixelbook for Next Google Event?

While Google has all but confirmed the reveal of the Pixel 4 for the upcoming October 2019 hardware event, 9to5Google reports the search giant will also present a Pixelbook, specifically a 13.3-inch Chromebook with a 4K display.

Supposedly dubbed the "Pixelbook Go," the device sees Google adopt a more traditional laptop form factor, as opposed to the 2-in-1 hybrid design of the original Pixelbook. The company had already hinted at making such a device back at the April Google Cloud Next 2019 event, with a presentation slide reading “now, our goal is to empower your agile, modern workforce to be productive on-the-go," while suggesting a future laptop.

IDC: Apple Retains Lead in EMEA Tablets

The EMEA tablet market is down by -11.7% Y-o-Y in Q2 2019, IDC reports, with shipments reaching 9.6 million units, even if detachable/hybrid devices represent a bright spot with shipments growing by 11.8% Y-o-Y following 2 years of consecutive quarterly declines.

"The expectation of a detachable rebound in the market was finally realized in Q2 and on a bigger scale than anticipated," the analyst says. "This was mainly driven by shipment pull-in of the freshly released iPad Air, a budget alternative to the iPad Pro and a contender to the Surface Go in the midrange tablet market with keyboard capabilities that have the potential to become a back-to-school winner."

HP Presents Elite Dragonfly Laptop

HP launches a business 2-in-1 laptop with the looks of a high-end consumer device-- the Elite Dragonfly, an addition to the EliteBook line featuring lightweight magnesium construction in a fetching shade of deep blue.

The 13.3-inch Elite Dragonfly is Project Athena-class, meaning it promises premium features from a compact and low weight machine. As such, while the laptop weighs less than 1kg HP promises 24.5-hour battery life, as well as Wifi 6 connectivity and optional 4G capability using 4x4 LTE antennas. The keyboard is ultra-lightweight, while the touchpad allows for an "ultra-smooth" experience.

Nvidia Boosts Laptop Capabilities With Quadro RTX 6000

Nvidia sets to further push notebook graphics capabilities with the portable version of the Quadro RTX 6000-- a graphics card making a first appearance in the Asus ProArt StudioBook One, the "world's most powerful laptop" according to the company.

Launched at IFA 2019, the StudioBook One is an angular 15-inch machine featuring a 4K UHD display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Pantone validation and 100% Adobe RGB colour coverage. It also includes a 9th gen Intel Core i9 processor, 64GB DDR4 memory and a 90Wh battery. However the Quadro RTX 6000 GPU is the main highlight, even if Nvidia fails to provide details aside from it featuring 24GB of "ultra-fast" GPU memory and being capable of tasks such as real-time ray tracing, AI and 8K video acceleration.

Acer Presents Entry-Level Predator Triton 300

IFA 2019 sees Acer announce an entry-level addition to the Predator gaming laptop lineup-- the Triton 300, a thin and lightweight Windows 10 machine promising "a perfect blend of performance and features."

The Triton 300 features a 15.6-inch IPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 3ms overdrive response time inside a slim aluminium chassis weighing just 2.3kg. Specifications include an up to 9th gen Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU, up to 32GB DDR4 memory, up to two 1TB PCIe NVMe SSDs (in RAID 0) and up to 2TB HDD.

Waves Nx technology offers immersive audio, while the keyboard has zoned RGB lighting and dedicated Turbo and Predator Sense keys. Keeping the machine cool are dual fans with 4th gen AeroBlade 3D metal fan technology, CoolBoost technology and "strategically placed" air intake and exhaust vents.
