Huawei Launches P30 Smartphones

An event in Paris brings all the details on the P30, a series of flagship smartphones Huawei claims will do nothing less than "rewrite the rules of photography" through the addition of a four-camera setup.

The P30 comes in 2 variants, regular and Pro. The Pro is the model with the most photography chops, since it features a 40MP Super Spectrum sensor, an ultra-wide 20MP sensor, a "Periscope zoom" allowing for 5x optical zoom and a flight depth-sensing camera. The 40MP sensor swaps the regular RGB colour filter for RYYB (red, blue, yellow), an arrangement the company says absorbs 40% more light to allow for cleaner photos. In addition, the company says a combination of the 5x periscope zoom with data from the other sensors produces a 10x lossless zoom.

HMD Puts 5 Cameras in Nokia 9 PureView

It takes a lot to impress at the crowded halls of MWC 2019, but HMD Global might have managed to do exactly that with the Nokia 9 PureView-- a smartphone with 5 cameras in the back, arguably the most put in a phone yet.

The 5 cameras share the same specifications, since each features a 12MP sensor and an f/1.8 lens. Two of the cameras shoot in colour, while the other three are in monochrome. To snap a photo, the cameras shoot at different exposures at the same time, before the phone merges all the image data into a single, ultra-detailed shot. Nokia even claims the individual cameras can shoot multiple exposures on their own, adding even more data to the final image.

Sony Xperia 1 Stands Tall at MWC 2019

Sony hopes the flagship Xperia 1 stands out at MWC 2019 with a striking 6.5-inch display-- one featuring not only an unusual 21:9 aspect ratio, but also what the company claims is the first 4K OLED HDR panel.

As a result the Xperia 1 features a display taller (or longer, depending how you look at it) than all the other 6.5-inch handsets available. The display is not bezel free, but it does offer 3840 x 1644 resolution and a Gorilla Glass 6 coating. In addition, Sony says it will optimise some movies and games for the handset for a full ultrawide experience, as well as allow users to take advantage of the tall screen for easier and more efficient multitasking.

Samsung Unfolds the... Galaxy Fold

Following months of teasing and speculation Samsung takes to the Unpacked stage to officially present its foldable phone-- the simply named Galaxy Fold, a smartphone customers can open into a 7.3-inch tablet-style display.

The Fold consists of two displays, a main "Infinity Flex" 1536 x 2152 resolution and a smaller 4.6-inch 1600 x 900 display on the back. When closed, the Fold acts like any other smartphone, but once opened content from the small display seamlessly appears on the larger screen. Samsung claims the backbone holding the device together can withstand thousands of folds, thanks to a hinge system consisting of multiple interlocking gears hidden at the rear of the device.
