Pocket Computer Makes a Comeback With Cosmo Communicator

Planet Computers sets to bring back the pocket computers of the 90s with the Cosmo Communicator-- a small(ish) clamshell machine reminiscent of the classic Nokia Communicator line, only with capabilities more in line with modern smartphones.

The Cosmo Communicator is technically the first pocket computer from Planet Computers, since earlier this year the company the Gemini Android-powered miniature laptop. However the Cosmo Communicator promises to be a more usable device, since it adds an earpiece, microphone, 24MP camera, fingerprint sensor and dedicated call buttons to the 6-inch 2160 x 1080 resolution touchscreen and hardware backlit QWERTY keyboard.

Samsung Details Foldable Phone

Samsung delivers on the promise of a foldable phone at its 2018 Developer Conference-- specifically by showing off an "Infinity Flex" technology consisting of a main 7.3-inch and a 4-inch display on the back.

“The foldable display lays the foundation for a new kind of mobile experience," Samsung CEO DJ Koh says. "We are excited to work with developers on this new platform to create new value for our customers. We cannot wait to see where the technology and collaboration takes us.”

Seen in admittedly chunky prototype form, the Infinity Flex device seamlessly shifts from folded to unfolded modes. To do so it runs on One UI, a take on Android Samsung says "delivers a new kind of mobile experience." According to the company, One UI allows apps to transition from the smaller to larger display as the device unfolds, as well as simultaneously run up to 3 apps on the larger display.

RED Hydrogen One Smartphone Hits Release

After nearly a year of delay, high-end digital cinema camera maker RED confirms a November 2018 release for the Hydrogen One, a smartphone featuring much hyped "four view" (or 4V) holographic technology.

According to the company, 4V technology allows the phone to handle regular 2D video, stereo 3D, augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality, all without need for glasses or headsets. Built by a company named leia, the 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 resolution LCD display carries "Diffractive Lightfield Backlighting" consisting of a "nanostructured light guide plate" beneath the display.

All the jargon sounds impressive, but early reports suggest the effect is more akin to the lenticular 3D found in the Nintendo 3DS as opposed to anything remotely "holographic." As for the rest of the phone, the device offers two sets of dual cameras-- a dual-8MP setup on the front and dual-12MP on the back. Both allow users to snap 3D photos and video, although such media can only be seen on another Hydrogen One handset.

Razer Presents Sequel to Gaming Phone

Are gamer customers in want for a premium gaming smartphone? Razer believes so as it unveils the Razer Phone 2, a high-end handset complete with LED lighting and a 5.72-inch UltraMotion IGZO LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Aesthetically the Razer Phone 2 remains very similar to the original, even if the all-edged design features a revamped aluminium frame, glass back and an illuminated Razer logo on the back acting as a notification LED. The display also promises improvements, since it handles 2560 x 1440 resolution with HDR support, 645 nits maximum brightness and Wide Color Gamut. Audio should also be impressive for a phone, since the stereo speakers carry Dolby Atmos certification.
