AOC Launches G2 Series Curved Monitors

AOC adds a pair of 34-inch ultra-wide (21:9) gaming monitors to the G2 series-- the CU34G2 and CU34G2X, both offering 3440 x 1440 resolution panels set in an "aggressive" 1500R curvature making a "VR-like experience."

According to the company, the monitors are around the same height as widescreen (16:9) 27-inch displays, providing plenty of screen space for everyday tasks as well as gaming. The two displays are essentially identical, other than the fact the CU34G2 features a 100Hz refresh rate while the CU34G2X is faster at 144Hz. As such, both have a VA panel for deep blacks and vivid colours, while AMD FreeSync support ensures stutter and tear-free gaming. Response time (MPRT) clocks at 1ms.

Context: W. European Monitor Sales on the Up

According to Context, W. European desktop monitor distributor sales see growth in early Q4 2019, following the trend begun in the previous three quarters of the year, with higher demand from consumer channels driving the market.

Combined business- and consumer-targeted monitor sales are up by 7% Y-o-Y in October 2019. While Q3 2019 saw growth in business sales alone, both segments are up in October, with increased sales to consumer etail and retail driving overall growth. In fact, the typical November sales started picking up in October, with sales to consumer channels (etail and retail) in Germany, UK, Spain and France growing by 30% over September 2019. For instance, October 2019 sales are up by over 60% month-over-month in Germany.

Video Chat on the TV With Facebook's Portal TV

Facebook goes to show the Portal video chatting device was not a one-off hardware offering as it announces the Portal TV, a means for customers to video chat using the biggest screen in the house.

The Portal TV looks like a miniature Microsoft Kinect, and plugs into TVs via HDMI port to allow Facebook users to make video calls using Messenger or WhatsApp. Video chats made using WhatsApp are perhaps more secure, being encrypted end-to-end, and users can disable the camera and microphone by pressing a button and sliding a cover in front of the device.

DisplayPort Reaches 2.0 With 8K Support

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) releases version 2.0 of the DisplayPort (DP) standard-- a first major update since March 2016 providing an up to 3X increase in data bandwidth compared to the most recent version, DP 1.4a.

In total DP 2.0 handles up to 77.37Gbps of bandwidth, with a maximum link rate of 20Gbps/lane and more efficient 128b/132b channel encoding. Thus it promises to address the requirements of future displays, such as "beyond 8K" (7680 x 4320) resolutions, higher refresh rates and high dynamic range (HDR support at higher resolutions, improved multiple display configuration support and an improved user experience with augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) displays, including support for 4K-and-beyond VR resolutions.
