Panasonic brings back the rugged Toughbook notebook line with a modular design-- the Toughbook 55 promises "unrivaled flexibility" thanks to modular expansion packs and accessories designed to accomodate a range of environments and personal preferences.

Toughbook 55Aimed primarily at enterprise and government customers, the Toughbook 55 notebooks feature expansion packs allowing the addition of features such as I/O ports, a fingerprint reader, dedicated graphics and a secondary storage drive. The main storage drive and optional second storage drive are quick-release for easy access, while the RAM and keyboard are also user-upgradeable. The battery promises the longest life in a Toughbook yet, and is hot-swappable without powering down or interruptions.

Internal specifications include up to Intel 8th gen quad-core i5 and i7 vPro processors, optional AMD discrete graphics, up to 2TB storage and 64GB RAM. Connectivity comes through USB-C, HDMI 2.0 and Bluetooth 5.0. Customers can add an optional 1000 nit touchscreen, and tetra-array microphones allow for "unmatched" speech recognition accuracy. The notebooks are also backward compatible with existing Toughbook 54 docks, sidestepping the need for accessory upgrades.

The Toughbook 55 is available now.
