The Return of the reMarkable eReader

Print

Back in 2016, Norwegian startup reMarkable launched the self-titled reMarkable, an oversized eReader with a "Canvas" display users can draw on. Now the device gets a sequel, and it claims to be "the most paper-like digital device the industry has ever seen."

Remarkable 2

Imaginatively named the reMarkable 2, the update features a change in design. Whereas the original is symmetrical, the sequel features a chrome band along the left-hand side, making it look more like a regular paper notebook. It is also thinner at 4.7mm, while the 10.3-inch 2nd generation Canvas display promises to be twice as the previous version, while offering a textured surface material making it feel more like paper than an eInk display.

Writing on the display involves an included stylus with a custom, pencil-style tip and cap-end eraser. The eReader is also able to convert handwritten notes into text (with support for 33 languages), and users can organise, annotate, search and share files with multiple platforms. A built-in Chrome plug-in reformats websites into a simplified format, ideal for reading on the monochrome display. Powering the device is a 3000mAh battery allowing for 2 weeks of use and up to 90 days on standby.

The reMarkable 2 is available now on a preorder basis, with preordered units including a market and folio case. Shipments are set to start from June 2020.
