Xiaomi presents the first smartphone running on its own mobile chipset-- the Mi 5c, a 5.15-inch handset designed mainly for the Chinese mid-range market.

Xiaomi Mi 5cThe chip inside the Mi 5c is the octa-core Surge S1. It promises lower power consumption, allowing the smartphone to carry a smaller 2860mAh battery with 9V/2A quick charge support for a slimmer (7.09mm) metal body. The chip is built by Xiaomi subsidiary Pinecone, and has been in development since October 2014.

Also included in the Mi 5c are a 1920 x 1080 resolution display, 3GB LPDDR3 RAM, 64GB eMMC 5.1 storage, front-facing fingerprint reader, dual-Nano SIM slots and 12MP rear-/8MP front-facing cameras. However, in its current form it only carries a China Mobile radio, meaning it only works in Xiaomi's home china.

The Mi 5c hits the Chinese market on March 2017. No word on a Western launch is available as yet.
