Planet Computers sets to bring back the pocket computers of the 90s with the Cosmo Communicator-- a small(ish) clamshell machine reminiscent of the classic Nokia Communicator line, only with capabilities more in line with modern smartphones.

Cosmo communicatorThe Cosmo Communicator is technically the first pocket computer from Planet Computers, since earlier this year the company the Gemini Android-powered miniature laptop. However the Cosmo Communicator promises to be a more usable device, since it adds an earpiece, microphone, 24MP camera, fingerprint sensor and dedicated call buttons to the 6-inch 2160 x 1080 resolution touchscreen and hardware backlit QWERTY keyboard.

Another interesting feature of the Cosmo Communicator is a 2-inch display allowing one to check notifications and calls when the device is closed. Powering the device is a Mediatek P70 8-core processor with "separate GPU and AI processors," together with 6GB RAM, 128GB internal storage (expandable via microSD slot) and 4220mAh battery. Connectivity comes through dual SIM slots, and a 3.5mm headphone jack is included. While the included OS is Android, users can also add a Linux-based OS (such as Sailfish OS or Debian) via multi-boot option.

The Cosmo Communicator is available on a preorder basis on the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform. The campain has already exceeded an intial $200000 pledge goal, and Pocket Computer promises shipments will start from May 2019.
