Computex 2019 sees HP return to the VR backpack PC concept with an update on the 2017 Omen X Compact Desktop-- the simply named VR Backpack G2, which drops the Omen branding and adds on the graphical capabilities.

HP VR Backpack PCTechnically aimed at the enterprise market (HP points out applications such as workplace training and VR development), the VR Backpack G2 still makes an interesting showcase for free-roam VR technology. It carries an 8th generation Intel Core i7 CPU and an Nvidia 2080 GPU to deliver what HP claims are 30% better performance and 25% faster graphics, and is powered by a pair of hot-swappable batteries.

As the name suggests users can wear the PC on their backs via appropriate harness, with a full range of ports (including x2 USB 3.0, x1 Thunderbolt-enabled USB-C, HMD and headphone-mic combo) allowing connection of headsets and peripherals. Once they are done with free-roam VR, users can also slot the machine in a dock, turning it into a desktop machine.

HP says the VR Backpack will be available in Q3 2019.
