Apple to Fix MacBook Pro Display Coating Issues?

E-mail Print PDF

According to MacRumors Apple plans a Quality Program to address "Staingate"-- a MacBook and MacBook Pro issue involving "horrific" stains affecting the Retina display.

Stained MacbookThe issue was first reported back in March 2015. It involves the wearing off or delamination of the anti-reflective coating due to a number of reasons, including pressure on the display by the keyboard and trackpad when the MacBook is closed, and the use of incorrect 3rd party cleaning solutions with microfibre cloths. The damange usually involves small screen areas, but sometimes can cover the entire display.

An online database has nearly 6000 customers sharing pictures of damaged displays, while a Change.org petition has thousands of signatures.

Currently fixing the issue involves a bit of a gamble-- some MacBook Pro owners covered by AppleCare managed to get repairs through the Genius Bar with no charge, but others are told the warranty does not cover cosmetic damage, and as such need to cough up for a service charge.

Apple has offered a number of Quality Programs based on common problems, such as an iSight Camera replacement program for iPhone 6 Plus, a Beats Pill XL speaker recall program and an iPhone 5 sleep/wake button replacement program.
