Snap Follows on Spectacles

E-mail Print PDF

Snap has not given up on wearable devices as it announces a sequel to 2016's Spectacles-- one offering slimmer frames, lighter lenses and the ability to take either photos or short videos.

Snapchat SpectaclesThe first Spectacles launched to a somewhat dim reception, as limited functionality, confusing software and privacy concerns lead to sales reaching just 220000 units. Snap claims to do better with the V2, with a more subtle design and the ability to put prescription lenses in the frames, as well as two mirrored lens options. Further improvements include a lighter internal processor, longer battery life (Snap says one can record and transfer 70 videos over a week on a single charge), an extra microphone and a waterproof design allowing use on the beach.

The updated design also lacks the yellow rings around the cameras, although it does flash LEDs whenever recording is taking place. Taking a photo or video is fairly easier-- one simply taps a button on the left side to record 10 seconds of video, or holds it down to take a photo. Videos record at 1216 x 1216 resolution, while photos are 1642 x 1642, and pushing recordings to smartphone requires pairing the Spectacles with the Snap app via wifi.

The new Spectacles are available now in the UK and France, with more European countries to follow from May 2018.
