SNK Shrinks Neo Geo Arcade Machine

E-mail Print PDF

SNK is the next company to take on the mini retro games console trend, if with a twist-- the Neo Geo Mini is a miniature version of the Japanese company's iconic arcade machines complete with built-in display.

Neo Geo MiniThe Neo Geo Mini is shrunken down version of the Neo Geo Multi Video System (MVS). Launched in 1990, the MVS allowed arcade owners to have different games on the same arcade cabinet by simply swapping out the games cartridge inside. Like the original, the Neo Geo Mini has a stubby joystick and four buttons, only measuring 135 x 108 x 162mm and weighing 600g.

SNK offers two versions of the Neo Geo Mini-- an International version for the European and N. American markets, and a more colourful (and arguably more desirable) Japanese version for, well Japan and Asia. Both are identical, with a 3.5-inch display, HDMI-out port, 3.5mm headphone jack and x2 external controller ports. Also included are 40 pre-loaded games, although SNK still has to specify the actual titles on offer.

Readers with longer memories might recall the Neo Geo Mini is not the first miniature version of an SNK machine-- in 2012 the company released the Neo Geo X, a handheld version of the arcade machine. Made under license by a company named Tommo, the Neo Geo X was so shoddily made SNK not only ordered an end to production just after a year, but also pulled all stock from retailers.

SNK still has to announce when the Neo Geo Mini hits the market.
