Micron starts mass production of next-generation GDDR6 RAM, with the first product being 8Gb (1GB) GDDR6 memory ICs, as the industry as a whole starts making the shift from the now decade-old GDDR5 standard.

Micron memoryThe announcement makes Micron the final vendor among the industry's Big 3 to start GDDR6 production. The 8Gb chips from the company will be available at different speeds, with 12Gbps and 14Gbps products operating at 1.35v aimed at the graphics market, followed by upcoming 16Gbps chips. Micron has also developed 20Gbps solutions, but has no details on such products as yet.

"Micron is a pioneer in developing advanced high bandwidth memory solutions and continues that leadership with GDDR6. Micron demonstrated this leadership by recently achieving throughput up to 20Gbps on our GDDR6 solutions," the company says. "In addition to performance increases, Micron has developed a deep partner ecosystem to enable rapid creation of GDDR6 designs, enabling faster time to market for customers looking to leverage this powerful new memory technology."

As the successor to GDDR5, GDDR6 is faster than even the latest GDDR5X-- even 12Gbps GDDR6 ships offer a 50% bandwidth boost compared to the fastest GDDR5 bins, while 14Gbps GDDR6 offers 17% more bandwidth over the fastest GDDR5X SKUs. Micron is the only GDDR5X producer, with such chips going to the fastest Nvidia Pascal products.
