The Microsoft Plan for Windows Gaming

E-mail Print PDF

Windows 10 might be the go-to system for games enthusiasts, but the Windows Store is don't-go-to for digital game purchases-- leading Microsoft to promise it will do better at the XO18 event.

Xbox app“I think we’ve got a ton of work to do on Windows,” Xbox chief Phil Spencer tells The Verge. “Windows is something I’m very committed to, I’ve heard the feedback about our Store. I’m going to take a bigger leadership role on what’s going on with the Windows Store, make it really tailored to the gamers that we know want to see the best from what we have to offer.”

The Microsoft Store is the only place PC gamers can buy certain first-party Microsoft titles, including desirable games such as Forza Horizon 4 and Gears of War 4. However it is plagued by by issues, including a lack of support for overlays from apps such as Fraps or Discord, no Nvidia Shadowplay support in some games, no sound in the case of alt-tabbing from some titles and, worst of all, an often buggy download and install procedure.

Microsoft promises to fix some issues in the near future, as well as improve on the Windows 10 Xbox app to make it more useful to PC gamers. For instance, the current incarnation is unable to control game installs and updates (such functionality is handled by an unreliable Microsoft Store). Gamers also demand features such as party chat audio control.

Will Microsoft manage to create an app store able to beat Steam in PC gaming space? Guess we will only have to wait to find out.
