LG Teases Gesture Control for MWC

E-mail Print PDF

The invite for the LG Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 press event has the company promise a farewell to touch-- instead, gesture appears to be the input method of choice for the latest devices from the S. Korean company.

Goodbye touch LG"Are you prepared to get stunned by the LG Premiere at the MWC 2019?" the description of the YouTube video asks, before giving a 24 February date for the MWC launch event. As to what LG will launch no one really knows for sure, although the grapevine suggests it will carry the "Premiere" name. Then again, perhaps that might simply be a case of taking the title of the teaser video a bit too literally...

One has to recall the idea of adding gesture control to smartphone is not too new-- a number of Galaxy Note devices, specifically the 3, 4 and 5, have what Samsung calls "air gestures," allowing users to control various functions simply waving at the device, without need to actually touch the screen. Such functionality does find some use, especially whenever one is wearing gloves or has dirty or wet hands.

In a separate piece of LG news, the S. Korean company shares the results of a customer survey dealing with 5G. It covers 1000 smartphone users in the US and S. Korea, and reveals 74% of respondents are looking forward to 5G, with the expectations that smartphones able to handle such services will be able to provide better multi-tasking (56.6%), UHD video (51.9%) and buffer-free broadcasts (40.9%), among other features.
