It takes a lot to impress at the crowded halls of MWC 2019, but HMD Global might have managed to do exactly that with the Nokia 9 PureView-- a smartphone with 5 cameras in the back, arguably the most put in a phone yet.
The 5 cameras share the same specifications, since each features a 12MP sensor and an f/1.8 lens. Two of the cameras shoot in colour, while the other three are in monochrome. To snap a photo, the cameras shoot at different exposures at the same time, before the phone merges all the image data into a single, ultra-detailed shot. Nokia even claims the individual cameras can shoot multiple exposures on their own, adding even more data to the final image.
The mechanism handling the image merging is a Lux Capacitor, a camera-control chip brought about from Light, maker of the 16-camera L16 camera. The phone actually needs the additional chip, since the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor powering it can only handle shooting with up to 3 lenses. In addition, a partnership with Adobe provides a pre-installed version of Lightroom complete with presets specifically tuned for device.
As for the rest of the smartphone, the Nokia 9 PureView offers a 5.9-inch 2K OLED display, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage and a 3320mAh battery. Construction features Gorilla Glass on both front and back, and offers IP67-rated waterproofing. Further details include an in-display fingerprint sensor, a face unlock system, Qi wireless charging and USB-C connectivity.
The Nokia 9 PureView is available from March 2019.
