Oppo Intros Reno Flagship

E-mail Print PDF

The next flagship device from Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is the Reno, launched in a choice of 3 versions-- Standard, 10x Zoom and, teased for an upcoming launch event in Zurich, a 5G version.

Oppo RenoThe Reno is perhaps most notable for the pop-up selfie camera, housed together with a soft light flash in a wedge-shaped panel. The design allows for a notch-free display, even if the camera lacks a 3D Face ID-style mechanism. Instead, an in-display fingerprint scanner handles security duties. As for selfie camera specs, it carries a 16MP sensor and an f/2.0 lens, and Oppo claims the motorised mechanism lasts up to 5 years even if one flips it up and down 100 times a day.

Moving to the actual phones, the Reno 10x Zoom is the higher-end device, with a 6.6-inch OLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 4065mAh battery, VOOC 3.0 fast charging, Dolby Atmos AC-4 audio and x3 microphones. However, as the name might suggest, the rear-camera array is the highlight.

It consists of a 13MP f/3.0 periscopic zoom camera, an 8MP f/2.2 super-wide camera (120-degrees) and a main f/1.7 shooter with a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor. Together, the 3 cameras cover a 16-160mm focal length and make a 10x hybrid zoom. Oppo adds both 48MP- and 13MP-cameras have optical zoom, while the chipset allows for 4K 60fps video recording with hybrid stabilisation, 3D audio capture and audio zoom.

The Reno Standard Edition has the 48MP main camera, but replaces the two other cameras with a 5MP depth camera. It is also smaller at 6.4-inch, and carries a lower-end Snapdragon 710 chipset and a smaller 3765mAh battery. However it does come in 2 extra colour options (pink and gradient purple, in addition to black and blue).

A future Zurich event will see Oppo detail a 5G version of the Reno-- one probably based on the 10x Zoom Edition adding a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem. Either way, all Reno devices will be available in Europe from 24 April 2019.
