The HDMI Founders announce an HDMI Alternative Mode for the USB Type-C specification, allowing the connection of HDMI-enabled displays to video sources via USB-C, with no need for additional protocols or adapters.

As announcement press release puts it, "this enables two of the most popular solutions for connectivity to come together-- the small form factor, reversible, and multi-purpose USB Type-C connector being adopted by smartphones, tablets and PC products, and HDMI, which is the leading display interface with an installed base of billions of displays."

To Destroy this Battery, Just Add Water

To Destroy this Battery, Just Add Water

Here's a means of powering gadgets that sounds ideal for Ethan Hunt and the Impossible Mission Force-- a battery one can destroy through the simple application of water.

Developed by Iowa State University, the battery is designed to power so-called "transient electronics," devices able to perform a variety of functions until exposure to light, heat or liquid. An obvious application for such devices is the military and espionage, but these also find use in medicine (specifically implants able to melt away when no longer needed) and temporary environmental sensors.

However, until now, transient electronics had a power issue-- they either relied on external, non-transient, power sources or early attempts at transient batteries with limited power, stability and self life. The Iowa State researchers claim to fix such issues, since their attempt at the technology powers a desktop calculator for around 15 minutes and self-destructs after being submerged in water for 30 minutes.

iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Goes International

Customers working in languages other than US English should be happy to learn Apple now offers the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard in a number of international layouts, all featuring the same dark gray design of the original.

The languages on offer are British English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Korean and Thai. The localised layouts come complete with differences related to the language in question, such as full support for right-to-left language in the case of the Arabic version. Such adjustments make sense, since iOS 9 already has comprehensive right-to-left language support.

Portable Watch Charger Hits Kickstarter

ThanoTech suggests the charger supplied with the Watch is not an as ideal as Apple believes it is-- necessitating the need for the Diskus, the first portable MFi-approved Watch charger.

The first notable feature of the Diskus is it replaces Lightning connectivity with a regular micro USB port. This allowed the makers to replace the 6-foot cable included with the Watch with a much shorter 1 foot alternative, and means users can borrow a micro USB cable from any other device they might have around.

Edward Snowden Designs Surveillance-Proof iPhone Case

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is continuing his anti-government surveillance work from his current exile in Russia, with a design for an iPhone case able to prevent snooping by outside parties.

Designed in collaboration with Andrew "Bunnie" Huang-- the founder of Bunnie Studios and the first person to hack the Xbox-- the iPhone case concept is described in a paper titled "Against the Law: Countering Lawful Abuses of Digital Surveillance." Primarily aimed at journalists, activists and rights workers, the case accesses the phone antennae through the SIM slot, and warns users through alarms and a small mono-colour display on the outside of the case.

Dubbed the "introspection engine," the add-on requires the SIM card to be installed in the case itself. It monitors all the radios inside the phone, including GPS, Bluetooth, wifi and cellular modem.
