Western Digital Reports on Thailand Recovery

WD is still working on restoring operations in flood-stricken Thailand-- managing to re-start HDD production in its Bang-Pa-in building one week ahead of internal schedules.

The company estimates HDD shipments for the industry in general will reach approximately 120M units due to the flooding-- in a quarter where demand reaches estimates of 170-180M units. Such HDD supply constraints should continue until at Q2 2012, if not beyond.

In other words, expect hiking prices next year.

PC Storage Market Picks Up in Q2

Global PC storage device shipments total 248.8M units in Q2 2011 with a Y-o-Y increase of 5.6% (from 235.5M units in Q2 2010), according to IHS iSuppli.

Contrary to analyst expectations, the earthquake disaster in Japan last March stimulated the storage market-- with OEMs accelerating orders and increasing inventory to ensure adequate supply.

The analyst divides the PC storage market in 3 segments-- HDDs (hard drives), ODDs (optical disc drives) and SSDs (solid state drives).

SanDisk announces SATA DEVLSLP-- an new SATA-IO standard proposal lowering current SATA SSD power consumptions.

Joining SanDisk are a number of industry leaders, including Intel, Samsung and Microsoft.

Some current best-in-class SSDs already have low power consumptions of around 50mW-- with SATA DEVSLP, SSDs should remain in a simlar low power state "the majority of the time".

SanDisk has even lower targets for the standard-- as low as 5mW.

Such low power consumptions should be good news for Continue reading...
