KA-SAT Rockets Into Internet Service

Eutelsat's KA-SAT High Throughput Satellite goes into service today, enchancing satellite-based IP service coverage across Europe and the Mediterranean.

It should be providing broadband-speed internet to more than 1m European households. Eutelsat says at least 13m european households are still beyond ADSL's range, while 17m are stuck with sub-broadband internet speeds of below 2Mbps.

Netgear Speeds Up Gateways

Netgear announces its N600 wireless dual band ADSL+2 modem router (DGND3700), combining an ADSL+2 modem with Netgear's own WNDR3700 wireless router.

It's also Netgear's first home router to carry a dual-core processor.

The router handles simultaneous 802.11n dual band networking and 2.4 and 5 GHz, with the 5 GHz band providing a les interference-prone channel for media streaming and networked gaming according to Netgear.

Current USB modems outsell embedded modems by more than 3:1 according to ABI Research-- a ratio that should change to around 1.2:1, but only by 2016.

Cisco launches its Linksys E-Series product family-- a suite of wifi routers and switches offering what the company describes as the "next generation" in a new hardware design.

The E-Series includes x5 routers providing not only enough performance for connected homes, but also faster speeds (up to 450 Mbps), 3x3 spatial stream configurations, external power amplifiers and virtual USB technology.

Devolo AG shows off its powerline-based offerings at CeBIT 2011-- including its new dLAN 500 series, the dLAN 200 AV USB extender and the dLAN Cockpit home network management software.

The dLAN 500 range has a transmission rate of 500 Mbps, fast enough to carry services such as broadband, 3D IPTV and VoIP.
