Arm Powers Future Smartphones With Cortex-A78 CPU

Arm announces a next generation of smartphone chips-- the Cortex-A78 CPU and Mali-G78 GPU, both aimed to power the flagship smartphones of 2021 and beyond by building on the successes of previous chip designs from the company.

The Cortex-A78 CPU promise a 20% increase in performance over the previous Cortex-A77 while using the same 1W power budget. It also claims more efficient compute workload management, as well as greater on-device Machine Learning (ML) performance. The result, Arm says, is smartphones capable of pushing multi-day, immersive 5G experiences, as well as the hardware to run the foldable devices machines of the future.

Full Reveal for LG Velvet Smartphone

LG releases the Velvet flagship smartphone in its home S. Korea, bringing about a full slew of details for the device, one featuring a 6.8-inch 2460 x 1080 resolution OLED display and the Snapdragon 765 chipset.

Long teased by the company, the Velvet claims to feature a combination of distinctive design and "tactile" elegance. One such touch involves the "Raindrop" camera array, with three cameras and LED flash set in descending order by size on the upper-left corner of the device. The cameras in question feature a 48MP main shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP depth sensor. A small central notch houses the 16MP front-facing camera.

Motorola Returns to Flagships With Edge+

Motorola follows on years making mid-range smartphones with a device aimed firmly at the flagship category-- the Edge+, a handset promising "speed, power and the ultimate 5G performance."

Based around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 platform, the Edge+ is a 6.7-inch number with a display set at a cinematic 21:9 screen ratio. The "Endless Edge" display wraps nearly 90-degrees around both sides of the device, and handles HDR10+ content and a 90Hz refresh rate. Also found inside the device are 12GB DDR5 RAM, 256GB storage (expandable via microSD card) and a big 5000mAh battery the company claims powers up to 2 full days of use on a single charge. The battery offers both wired and wireless charging, and can even charge other devices through wireless power sharing. The body is IP54 water-repellent, and includes a 3.5mm jack together with a pair of Waves-tuned speakers.

Apple Confirms Lower-Cost iPhone SE

Apple proves the rumours right with the quiet announcement of the iPhone SE-- an entry-level iPhone model packing the A13 Bionic processor from the iPhone 11 in the 4.7-inch design of the iPhone 6.

Aimed as a replacement for the iPhone 8, the current Apple smartphone of choice for budget-conscious customers, the iPhone SE features not only the aforementioned A13 Bionic chip, but also what the company claims is the "best single-camera system ever in an iPhone." The 12MP rear-facing shooter uses the capabilities of the A13 Bionic to offer an enhanced Portrait mode and Smart HDR for natural-looking images. Customers can also record 4K 60fps video and edit images using the "powerful" editing tools found in iOS 13.

Planet Computer Brings Back the PDA

Planet Computer, the company behind the Cosmo Communicator, returns to crowdfunding with another PDA-- the Astro Slide 5G Transformer, a device the company claims is "the most powerful 5G smartphone and pocket computer hybrid."

The Astro Slide appears to satisfy both modern and old-school sensibilities, since a "revolutionary" RockUp slider hinge reveals a physical QWERTY keyboard beneath the 6.53-inch touchscreen. The hinge even allows one to flip the display up when they slide out the keyboard, turning the device into a mini-laptop. Planet Computer says the keyboard makes the Astro Slide ideal for emails, messaging and editing documents, and the device runs on Android 10 with a multi-boot option offering Linux support.
