W. European monitor sales are up by a record 35% Y-o-Y in March 2020, Context reports, leading to an overall increase of 18% Y-o-Y for Q1 2020, as the current pandemic crisis drives a need for better hardware.

Such results are beyond the expectation of analysts, even those who expected monitor sales to grow in H1 2020. The 2nd half of February saw distributors increase orders as customers prepared for future product shortages, understandable considering the shuttering of many factories in China. Eventual lockdowns in most European countries led to many employees to start working home, leading to a surge in demand for desktop monitors, as well as PCs and computing accessories.

LG Ships UltraGear 34GN850-B Monitor

LG announces an addition to the UltraGear gaming monitor line-- the 34GN850-B, a curved ultrawide display based around a 34-inch 21:9 ratio Nano IPS panel with 1800R curvature and 3440 x 1440 resolution.

According to the company, the Nano IPS panel has 1ms (GtG) response time, rivaling that of TN panels. The refresh rate is 144Hz, with the option of a 160Hz boost using the DisplayPort 1.4 connection. The display is Nvidia-tested and officially verified to be G-Sync compatible, and also carries AMD Premium FreeSync certification. A Dynamic Action Sync mode allows gamers to "catch every single action in real-time," while other gaming features include Black Stabiliser and built-in crosshair options.

The coronavirus pandemic has lead to a massive increase of home workers-- and many need a means to let family members when they can (and cannot) interrupt. Enter Joan Home, a product promising to be a hassle-free means to do exactly that.

The Joan Home is, essentially, a consumer version of the Visionect meeting room display solution. It is a small and lightweight ePaper display able to display current availability and the calendar/schedule for the day. It connects to existing calendars wirelessly, with support for all major ones, and updates user status in real-time without need to install yet another app. In fact, setup takes place via online Joan portal complete with language and custom content settings.

Asus Presents 27-inch Curved ROG Strix, TUF Monitors

Asus presents a pair of 27-inch curved monitors under the ROG Strix and TUF gaming ranges-- the ROG Strix XG27WQ and the TUF Gaming VG27VH1B, both featuring VA panels with 1500R panel curvature and maximum refresh reaching 165Hz.

The ROG Strix XG27WQ is the higher end model, since it offers 2560 x 1440 resolution and higher brightness at 450cd/m2. It also features VESA DisplayHDR 400 compliance, covers 92% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and includes a USB hub with x1 USB-B and x2 USB-A ports. Like other pieces of ROG Strix hardware, the monitor includes Aura Sync lighting, with LEDs around the back, and the included stand is height adjustable.

MSI Adds to Optix MAG Gaming Monitors

MSI announces a pair of additions to the Optix MAG gaming monitor line-- the MAG273 and MAG273R, both featuring a 27-inch FHD IPSA panel claiming a max refresh rate of 144MHz and 1ms response time.

The two monitors are near-identical, with the only difference between the two being the MAG273R adds a MSI Mystic Light-enabled RGB strip along a rear extrusion. As such, both displays support AMD FreeSync (30-144Hz) and cover 19% of the DCI-P3 and 139% of the sRGB colour gamut. Further features include HDR capability, 1000:1 contrast ratio, wide viewing angles and anti-flick and low blue light modes. Max brightness clocks at 250 nits.

IDC: Monitors Hit 5-Year High in Q4 2019

The global PC monitor market is up by 5% Y-o-Y in Q4 2019, IDC reports, as shipments exceed analyst expectations by reaching "just over" 33.2 million units, a number last exceeded back in Q4 2014.

Monitors also did well in full-year 2019, as shipments are up by 1.5%. Boosting such monitor momentum is the business segment, with device refresh projects further consolidating the market. In fact, the top 3 vendors-- Dell, HP and TPV-- hold nearly 50% of the 2019 market. Other factors further helped the market, including the increase in monitor sizes (23.8-inch screens overtook the 21.5-inch) and strong gaming monitor adoption.

AOC follows on the 35-inch curved Agon AG353UCG with a smaller monitor offering a faster refresh rate-- the Agon AG273QZ, a 27-inch flat panel display offering a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz and QHD resolution.

The Agon AG273QZ features a 2560 x 1440 resolution TN panel the company claims allows for a wider colour gamut compared to regular TN panels. It is capable of 400 nits peak brightness, together with a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 170/160 degree viewing angles, 0.5ms MPRT response time and the aforementioned 240Hz refresh rate.

AOC Presents Agon AG353UCG Ultra-Wide Curved Gaming Monitor

AOC claims to have a display that "ticks all the gamers' boxes"-- the Agon AG353UCG, a 35-inch 3440 x 1440 resolution curved ultra-wide monitor featuring a 200Hz refresh rate and 2ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response time.

An followup to the 2018 Agon AG352UCG6, the AG353UCG carries a VA quantum dot panel the company claims can reproduce 90% DCI-P3 colour coverage at 1000 nit peak brightness with VESA DisplayHDR 1000 and a 2500:1 contrast ratio. 512 local dimming zones allow for a wide dynamic range. Display curvature is at a 1800R radius, while the resolution makes it a curved 21:9 ratio UWQHD display.

The 17-inch ROG Strix XG17AHPE Portable Monitor

Asus launches a 17.3-inch portable gaming monitor under the ROG brand-- the Strix XG17AHPE, a battery-powered display featuring 1920 x 1080 resolution IPS panel with 240Hz refresh rate and variable refresh support.

The battery inside the XG17AHPE is a 7800mAh number, and promises to power up to 3.5 hours of gaming on a single charge. In total the monitor is 1cm and weighs 1060g with a "super narrow bezel design." The monitor is adaptive sync compliant, and as such can adjust to sync with graphics card output for smoother, tear-free fast-moving visuals, although Asus does not say whether it has FreeSync or G-Sync certification.
