The Data Loss Risks of SSDs

E-mail Print PDF

Solid-state drives make for a great upgrade for your customers, but research by Seagate chairman Alvil Cox suggests SSDs might pose data loss risks if left unplugged in an environment with varying temperatures.

SSDAccording to the study, the period of time "some" SSDs retain data when unpowered can be slashed in half for every 5°C rise in ambient temperature. In other words, if an SSD retains data for 2 years if kept at 25°C, that length of time is cut down by half (to 1 year) if the temperature rises to 30°C.

Surprisingly consumer SSDs appear to perform better at this test than enterprise models-- consumer SSDs tend to retain data for around 2 years when held when held in optimal conditions, while the enterprise SSD data retention period clocks at 20 weeks. As a result, a 5°C increase in temperature can drop that period to just 10 weeks. To think that, in some countries, 30°C is not even too high a temperature…

Google Brings Nexus to an End With Pixel Phones

The Made by Google event involves a bevy of hardware announcements, including search giant's next smartphone line-- dubbed Pixel, not Nexus-- the Daydream View VR headset, the Home smart speaker, the simply named Wi-Fi router and the 4K-capable Chromecast Ultra.

Made By Google Clearly underlining the end of an era, the Pixel-branded smartphones are described as wholly designed by Google, with HTC simply taking care of manufacturing duties. The phones come in two sizes (the 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL) and carry AMOLED displays, quad-core Snapdragon 821 CPUs, 4GB RAM and 12.3MP cameras inside aluminium and glass bodies.

However what Google really pushes with the smartphones-- and the rest of its hardware announcements-- is the software. The Pixel phones run on the latest version of Android and come with Assistant (the Google take on the Siri-style voice assistant) built-in. A long press on the Home button summons the Assistant, allowing one to access a variety of Google services and connected apps through voice alone.

Accessory maker SteelSeries announces what it claims is "the world's first dual-surface RGB illuminated mousepad"-- the QcK Prism, a mousepad featuring a dual-textured reversible surface, as well as the obligatory LED lighting.

Steelseries mousepadThe "dual-surface" portion of the above claim comes via insert users can flip to choose between either a hard polymer surface (for fast-paced gaming) or micro-textured cloth (for extra control). SteelSurface says one can insert some of its QcK and Dex pads in the Prism base, but separately supplied mousing surfaces might not fit due to 1-5mm manufacturing tolerances.

Asus Chairman Jonney Shih took the stage at Computex 2017 to present The Edge of Beyond, an introduction to a new line-up of thin-and-light ZenBook and VivoBook laptops.

Zenbook Flip SThe star of the event was “the world’s thinnest convertible notebook,” the ZenBook Flip S.

Shown at Computex 2017, ASUS ZenBook Flip S is one of the world’s thinnest and lightest convertible laptops, weighing 1.1kg and 10.9 mm thin. The 13.3 inch display works either in full HD or 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution.

Available are versions with Intel processors i5-7200U or i7-7500U and with 8 or 16 GB RAM.

A Cryorig Cooler for SSDs

Cryorig claims to have a first on show at Computex 2018-- the Frostbit, an "M.2 NVMe SSD aftermarket cooler with dual-heatpipe technology" to ensure "crucial bits and bytes" remain nice and cool.

Cryorig coolerThe Frostbit attaches to the SSD via finned heatspreader connected to dual-stacked heatpipes. In turn, the heatpipes conduct heat away from the drive to a large surface area cylindrical heatsink. The device measures 72 x 26.3 x 57mm, weighs 56g and is adjustable to fit different PC setups. Thus, users can tilt it to either side to avoid the GPU or large CPU coolers.
