Magnetoelectrics: The Next Step in Memory?

E-mail Print PDF

Physicists at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory may have found the materials making the next generation of memory-- "magnetoelectrics" with linked magnetic and electric properties.

Titanium oxide cageMagnetoelectric materials allow one to control magnetic behaviours via the application of electrical current, or vice versa. As physicist Philip Ryan puts it "electricity and magnetism are intrinsically coupled-– they’re the same entity. Our research is designed to accentuate the coupling between the electric and magnetic parameters by subtly altering the structure of the material."

The team at Argonne uses EuTiO3 (europium-titanium oxide), a compound whose atomic structure has a titanium atom inside an atomic "cage" of europium and oxygen (see picture). Compressing the cage (via thin EuTiO3 film) and applying voltage shifts the titanium, electrically polarising the compound and essentially changing the magnetic order of the material.

iSuppli: Ultrabooks Drag NAND Flash Market

According to IHS iSuppli 2012 WW NAND flash memory revenues drop by -7% to $19.7 billion (down from $21.2bn in 2011) as ultrabook sales negate the impact of surging demand from Apple.

The analyst is still hopeful for the future though, and predicts 2013 revenues will rise to $22.4bn before expanding during the next few years.

“Because of its high-memory density, combined with high-volume shipments, Apple’s iPhone line in 2012 was the largest single consumer of NAND, helping to increase demand for the memory from the smartphone market,” iSuppli remarks. “However Ultrabook sales fell short of industry expectations, dragging down the overall NAND market for the year.”

Apple iPhones consume 10.5% of the total 2012 NAND flash supply-- while all other smartphones use just 10.4%. The iPhone has an average NAND flash density of 24.5GB, the highest in all smartphones according to the analyst.

Intel Confirms Web TV Ambitions

Intel confirms ambitions to enter the online TV market-- at the AllThingsD Dive Into Media conference Intel corporate VP of media Erik Huggers claims the company will provide a "superior experience" to what is currently available.

IntelThe development comes from Intel's newly formed media division formed by former Apple, Jawbone, BBC and Microsoft employees.

Apparently already in testing, the Intel take on STBs delivers live TV via the internet (with smaller channel bundles than what cable companies offer) and a "Catch Up TV" video-on-demand service.

In other words, the company is gunning for both cable and video-on-demand business through an Intel-powered "an all in one solution" providing "not a value play but a quality play.”

ALSO-Actebis fiscal 2012 group net profits total €46.3 million (73.4% higher than 2011) from net sales reaching €6.3 billion, results the company describes as "strong."

Also ActebisWhen it comes to Q4 2012, net profit is up by 27.2% Y-o-Y to €21.5m, while profit before tax (EBT) totals €28.5m with 29% Y-o-Y growth.

ALSO-Actebis 2012 sales in C. Europe total €4772m (up from €4732m in 2011), with particularly strong demand in the mobility (smartphones and tablets) segment.

Meanwhile the N./E. European segment sales grow by 3.5% to €1669m despite economically difficult times, with EBT growing by 52.4% to €12.5m.

What's Bill Gates Up To?

Now you can read the letter Bill Gates wrote on his progress to save the world. It's the 2013 Annual Letter from Bill Gates.

Bill GatesOnce a nerd, always a nerd: Bill talks about the need to measure (and the need for measurements) in his battle to stop polio, improve education, empower gender equality, reduce child mortality, protect the environment and eradicate poverty.

This nerd is spending a lot of money (the money you made for him selling Windows) in a serious way. Read this letter to find out if he is making more progress than Steve Ballmer is these days.

And check out the cool video: Hans Rosling on The River of Myths.
