Gartner: Q4 W. European PC Market Declines

E-mail Print PDF

According to Gartner Q4 2012 W. European PC shipments drop by -11.7% Y-o-Y to 15.3 million units, with declines across all PC segments as the market continues its shift towards tablets and mobile devices.

"The PC market in W. Europe is in a downward spiral," Gartner says. "In 2012, it experienced the 2nd consecutive year of decline, but less steeply than in 2011, when the PC market in W. Europe decreased -14%. The 2nd consecutive yearly decline indicates that the issues the PC market faces are beyond a weak economy, a poorly understood new OS, or Ultramobiles being priced too high to generate demand.”

Mobile and desktop PC shipments drop by -12.1% and -10.9% respectively in Q4 2012, the professional segment drops by -4.9% (a less severe decline thanks to replacement purchases) and consumer shipments decline by -17.6% Y-o-Y.

HP remains the W. European market leader, even if it lost share in the mobile and home PC segments (leading to a -8.8% Y-o-Y drop in shipments), with 21.5% market share thanks to leadership within the desktop and professional markets.

The DAC in a USB Stick

AudioQuest has a proposal to improve on the poor quality audio PC sound cards tend to produce-- the DragonFly, a USB Digital-Audio Converter (DAC) the size of a flash drive.

DragonFly DACDesigned to feed headphones or speakers (via 3.5mm jack), the DragonFly carries a 24-bit ESS Sabre DAC chip, 2 clocks and the Streamlength asynchronous USB data transfer protocol to ensure optimal, jitter-free digital-to-analog PC audio conversion.

The DAC chip circuitry is direct-coupled through the analog output section, further reducing sonically degrading components in the signal path. A 64-position analog controller carries out volume control instructions, even when one uses the PC media player volume slider.

The DragonFly is compatible with both PCs and Mac media players and handles all audio formats, from MP3 and CD-standard 16-bit/44kHz to native 24-bit/96kHz FLAC and Apple Lossless.

The next Xbox Live package will offer customers more than just games and apps of the Netflix variety-- it will also include interactive TV content, thanks to an in-house Microsoft production studio.

xbox dummySpeaking at the D: Dive Into Media conference, Microsoft head of interactive entertainment Yusuf Mehdi claims “all I’ll say about our current and future investment is [that it is] about doing things that are big and premium. Other people will try some lower-end things; what we will do is things that are big and beautiful.”

Set for launch later in 2013, the Microsoft TV service will add " another level of interactivity," with Kinect feature integration and second-screen options via SmartGlass.

Google to Push Further into Retail?

9to5Google reports Google is planning stand-alone retail outlets in the US, if not beyond-- with hopes to open the first flagship Google Stores to customers by the holiday season.

ChromezoneAccording to "an extremely reliable source," Google wants to offer hands-on experience to its customers, just as the competition (Apple and Microsoft) already does.

Apparently Google Glass is the reason the company wants to push further into physical retail-- Google leadership believes potential customers will need to try the augmented-reality glasses before purchase. Such stores will also provide an opportunity to demonstrate upcoming Google projects (such as driverless cars), not to mention merchandise sales.

Other clues pointing towards Google take on retail include recent job postings for Point of Sale system developers.

Retail is not exactly a new sector for Google, even beyond online-- the company already has a physical retail presence in the shape of "Chromezone" stores inside 50 PCWorld and Dixons branches in the UK. However such outlets only offer Chromebooks and related accessories, and Google does not handle actual product or monetary transactions.
