Microsoft Buys Nokia Devices & Services

In a spot of breaking late-night surprise news Microsoft buys the Nokia Devices & Services division, together with licenses for Nokia patents and mapping services. The price? A cool €5.44 billion.

Elop BallmerThe acquisition covers both smartphones and feature phone lines (chiefly the Lumia and Asha series), and sees the transfer of 32000 Nokia employees to Microsoft from design, operations, sales, marketing and support teams.

Nokia retains its myriad patents, but grants Microsoft a 10-year non-exclusive license.

"It's a bold step into the future-- a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says. "Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services."

LG Takes on Tablets With G Pad

LG announces a tablet addition to the G mobile device series ahead of IFA 2013-- the G Pad 8.3, an 8-inch number featuring a "Full HD" display, "unique" user experience and a variety of connectivity options.

G Pad 8.3A companion device to the G2 smartphone, the G Pad 8.3 carries a 1920x1200 display, quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage.

It runs on Android 4.2, and powering all is a 4600mAh battery promising "long-lasting usage."

Galaxy Tab 3 Gets Kid Sibling

Never let it be said Samsung is a slouch when it comes to targeting different markets-- the company launches the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids, a version of the titular tablet designed for your customers' offspring.

Tab 3 KidsShipped inside rugged, colourful casing complete with a chunky handle and an easy-to-grip stylus, the Tab 3 Kids features a number of pre-loaded educational, entertainment and e-book apps together with a special app store called, well, Kids Store.

Parents get a number of device management options-- one can select the apps kids can access via Application Manager, while Time Management allows one to set specific password-specifica usage time periods.

Inside are regular Galaxy Tab 3 guts, with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 3MP front- and 1.3MP rear-facing cameras.

Intel Details "Depth Sensing" Cameras

Intel is working on "depth sensing" cameras to "bridge the gap between the real and virtual world," perceptual products and solutions director Anil Nanduri tells IDG News-- a technology to appear in ultrabooks and laptops by H2 2014.

Intel cameraAccording to the company such cameras will bring about a level of interaction far beyond keyboard, mouse or even touchscreen interfaces, being able to identify characteristics, contours and shapes of items in view.

"You'll add the ability to sense your excitement, emotion-- whether you are happy or smiling," Nanduri says. "The algorithms and technologies are there, but they are getting more refined, and as they get more robust, you'll see them."

Reader-Friendly Tablets from Kobo

Since many customers use tablets as an eReader replacement Kobo aims a tablet line specifically at such use-- the Arc series, with a Reading Mode ideal for interruption-free eBook consumption.

Arc tabletsReading Mode turns off notification (emails, apps, social media) and optimises screen brightness and battery consumption. Users can either switch to Reading Mode manually or set it on automatic.

Meanwhile a Pocket feature allows one to save articles from web browser to a Kobo device.
