Apple vs Samsung: (Patent) Trial of the Century

E-mail Print PDF

The legal battle between Apple and Samsung hits the San Jose courts, marking the beginning of the patent jury of the year, if not the century-- one forcing the two companies to reveal a few interesting secrets.

Apple Samsung DesignsAs we all know, this US-based legal battle is just one of many spread all over the globe. Recent Apple vs Samsung decisions already took place in British and German courts.

Will Apple convince the jury it can claim monopoly on a design amounting to a rectangular screen with rounded corners? Samsung hopes not, accusing Apple of stifling "legitimate competition" in order to "maintain its historically exorbitant profits."

Apple claims Samsung infringes 4 design patents and 3 utility patents, and demands $2.5 billion in damages. Meanwhile Samsung demands a 2.4% royalty rate on iOS device prices for the infringement of 5 communications patents.

Up or Down? PCs' War of the Words

Are PCs growing or declining? While Gartner reports on a virtually flat Q2 2012 for the WW PC market , Canalys breaks the mould by saying global PC shipments grow by 11.7% Y-o-Y in the quarter.

When it comes to EMEA, Gartner says Q2 2012 growth totals all of 1.9% Y-o-Y, as demand remains "very weak." Unlike Canalys, who says EMEA Y-o-Y growth is up to 17.3%.

It all boils down to what the analysts actually define as a "PC." Canalys adds tablets to its PC market totals. Gartner and virtually all other analysts (such as IDC) do not.

As a result Canalys says "2012 is shaping to be a record year"-- but only for vendors selling tablets. However when it comes to Windows PCs Canalys echoes all other analysts with talk of new lows and disappointing shipments.

Logitech Losses Higher than Anticipated

Logitech reports Q1 2012 net losses reaching $52.1 million-- far more than the $29.6m losses from Q1 2011, and more than double earlier analyst estimates of losses reaching around $20m.

LogitecThe biggest peripheral vendor in the world also sees a -14% Y-o-Y decrease in EMEA retail sales (reflecting "sustained weakness in the region"), while global sales decline by -4% Y-o-Y-- even if the LifeSize enterprise videoconferencing segment sees 34% Y-o-Y growth in sales.

While peripheral sales are generally declining due to the current customer preference of tablets to PCs, Logitech also blames its losses on the failed Google TV experiment of sorts, the Logitech Revue.

The Google TV STB failed to find an audience, even with prices cut from $249 to $99, a repricing exercise hitting company finances with costs reaching $34m.

As a result of such losses CEO Gerald Quindelan (an outspoken Google supporter of the Google TV platform) is now out of a job. Replacing him as acting CEO is chairman and former CEO Guerrino De Luca, at least until the company finds a long term replacement.
