The Internet Explorer Tax

E-mail Print PDF

Australian online CE retailer Kogan does not want customers to access its website with outdated internet browsers so much it just implemented the world's first Internet Explorer 7 tax.

IE7 TaxThat's right, anyone who makes a purchase while using IE7 pays a 6.8% surcharge (0.1% for each month the browser has been on the market).

Anyone who visits the Kogan website through IE7 also gets a message saying "you or your system administrator has been in a coma for over 5 years."

Why? Web designers don't like IE7 too much, since it is the least standards-compliant of all current browsers, thus demanding separate testing and design changes to make sites appear correctly on all browsers. Kogan believes such "huge" costs are not only unacceptable, and demands customers should download a more up-to-date browser.

"This will help us increase our efficiency, help keep prices for all smart shoppers down, and hopefully help eradicate the world of the pain in the rear that is IE7!" Kogan concludes.

Media Markt Shelves Norway Plans

The Metro Group-controlled Media Markt cancels entry in the Norwegian market, shelving 3 years of plans according to Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Næringsliv.

Media MarktBack in March 2011 Media Markt announced it was going to open a total of 20 retail outlets in Norway, with one giant shop rivalling leading Nordic competitor, Elkjøp, in size. Stores were to open by Q3 2012, and Media Marked had even signed a number of land-related contracts.

But now, according to the Dagens Næringsliv, Metro will instead focus efforts on emerging markets such as Turkey, Russia and China.

Media Markt Nordics manager Mikael Hagman says "We knew that a launch in Norway would be tough... the competitive situation was known from day one and thus not part of the decision. It is entirely due to factors outside the region."

The newspaper also says Metro management might rethink the decision on whether to enter Norway or not-- but will probably only do within the next 4-5 years.

E-mail Print PDF

There is something of a craze for tiny PCs lately-- now VIA follows the example of Raspberry Pi and FXI Cotton Candy with the APC 8750 Android PC system, a miniature PC the size of a small banana.

VIA APCMeasuring 17 x 8.5cm, the APC 8750 uses the Neo-ITX form factor and fits in standard Mini-ITX or microATX chasses. It carries an 800MHz VIA WonderMedia ARM SoC (with built-in GPU handling 720p video), 512MB RAM, 2GB storage, x4 USB ports, microSD slot, 10/100 ethernet port and a 15W power adapter.

VIA says the APC uses all of 13.5W of power on maximum load, and idles at 4W.

Like the Raspberry Pi, it connects to HDTVs (via HDMI or VGA), but uses a custom Android 2.3 build. The OS is apparently optimised for keyboard and mouse input, and comes with an internet browser and a variety of apps.

The APC costs only $49, and pre-orders are already open.

PC Market Grinding to a Halt?

E-mail Print PDF

According to Business Insider, the PC market looks "flat and mature" as after "decades of sustained growth" WW shipments are grinding down to a halt.

The reasoning behind the gloomy forecast goes as follows-- global 2011 PC shipments are up by only 4% Y-o-Y, the slowest growth rate since 2001. In comparison, 2010 PC shipments grew by 14%.

PC Market

The reasons for such a slowdown are both various and well known by now. A "choppy" global economy (affecting both consumer and business spending), longer PC upgrade cycles (especially in the enterprise segment) and the iPad kicking down a once thriving netbook market.

Hopes remain the Windows 8 launch will drive consumer adoption-- although some analysts argue many prospective customers might find the upgrade's changes confusing, and will prefer to either stick to Windows 7 or switch to Apple.

Microsoft is even encouraging businesses to upgrade to Windows 7 now, rather than waiting for the  Windows 8 launch. Windows XP remains the most commonly used OS, with desktop PC share reaching 46.08% according to Net Applications.

IHS iSuppli reports the global HDD market reaches "record revenues" in Q1 2012-- $9.6 billion, thanks to higher average selling prices following the October 2011 Thailand floods.

The industry high Q1 2012 revenues beat the previous record of $9.3bn from Q1 2010.

Shipments for the quarter reach 145 million units-- still down from pre-flood Q3 2011 shipments of 174m units. However average selling prices are much higher, being $66.28 compared to Q3 2011 prices of $51.49.

The analyst estimates full recovery to pre-flood shipment levels will only take place at around Q3 2012, one full year after the disaster. Average HDD prices will take longer to drop, remaining at elevated levels throughout 2012 and 2013.

Seagate tops the HDD vendor rankings, with revenues reaching $4.45bn and 46% market share. Western Digital follows at 32% (with revenues reaching $2.6bn if one adds contributions from recent completed purchase Hitachi GST).
