Intel Rivals Team Up in HSA Foundation

E-mail Print PDF

AMD, ARM, Imagination, MediaTek and Texas Instruments team up in a collective effort against the mighty Intel-- the HSA Foundation, a non-profit alliance formed around the mysterious art of "Heterogeneous System Architecture."

HSA FoundationAfter all, as the old saying goes, "the enemies of my enemy are my friends." Or is that "the enemy of Intel is my friend"?

What is Heterogeneous System Architecture (aka HSA)? It is a fairly old concept, actually. Heterogeneous-- or hybrid-- processors use all chip components (such as CPUs and GPUs) as co-processors of a "parallel computing engine."

This directly opposes the way current processors work, where all components act as solo units on specialised tasks.

Apple's WWDC 2012: MacBook Refresh, iOS 6, Gloating

E-mail Print PDF

Apple reveals no new iDevices at WWDC 2012, focusing instead hardware and software upgrades-- a MacBook portfolio refresh, the iOS 6 reveal and more details on Mountain Lion OS X.

WWDC 2012As it is typical of such Apple events, there was also plenty of gloating. The WWDC keynote starts off with the Siri voice assistant taking shots at Android names (saying they were created by "Ben and Jerry"), Samsung phones (comparing them to refrigerators) and Microsoft, before Tim Cook rolls out the big numbers Apple likes so much (30 billion app downloads from 400 million App Store accounts, for instance).

Stranger Than Fiction: The Launch of a New PC Brand

E-mail Print PDF

In 2000, William Wang sold MAG monitors from Taiwan (a well-known brand at that time) to US clients like Gateway. He boarded Singapore Airlines Flight 006 (a Boeing 747-400) in Taipei and, distracted by an incoming typhoon, the plane attempted take-off on a closed runway. It hit some construction equipment and crashed... killing 83 out of 179 people on board.

Wang walked away from that plane crash. That experience probably best prepares Wang for what he is just about to do.

But before we go there, let's just say that what Wang has already done is even more incredible than his walked-away-from-a-plane-crash history.

Ted Waitt [then Gateway's famed chairman] had been one of Wang’s customers at MAG. In 2001, Gateway asked Wang to help put together a TV strategy and Wang’s team put together Gateway's 42" plasma TV system, priced at an impressive $2999. At the time, comparable systems were selling for as much as $6000.

Despite the fact that Gateway's TV didn't unseat Sony, Sharp, Toshiba and other traditional TV makers in USA...in 2003, at age 43, Wang took partners and $600,000 and decided to start a TV company.

Autonomic Media Server Gets Boost

Autonomic upgrades the popular cloud-enabled Mirage MMS-5 media server with the MMS-5A-- now with a re-designed chassis, a new UI and audiophile-grade playback.

MMS-5AThe MMS-5A supports 24-bit/192kHz digital USB audio output, while Autonomic claims the upgraded "sexy" chassis is ultra-quiet through the removal of the internal fan. The new UI makes navigation through online media sources (Pandora, Rhapsody, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Spotify and TuneIn) easier.

Users can also add content from iDevices via AirPlay support.

Mirage media servers allow users to sync music from local sources (Mac, PC or NAS) with other MMS units by uploading media to the cloud-- providing remote library access from other locations. Internal storage comes through 1TB HDD.

The system supports x6 independent audio streams with digital outputs (including USB) and x4 stereo pairs of analog RCA outputs for distribution to any number of zones. It is compatible with standard A/V racks (1RU) and includes rack ears, optional feet and defeatable front panel blue light.
